I afraid most of the answers are wrong as they simply wanted recognition. They believed and probably correctly that if recognized that Lincoln would have to do the same and alone us to leave the union. We had counted on a peaceful exit and had resisted escalation of our military. At the same time we would be able obtain loans and secure material. Britain and France let us down and many old Southerners would never forgive them.
God Bless You and Our Southern People.

Do you mean during the Civil War? If I remember my high school history right, they wanted these two nations to enter the war, either on their side or as what we'd think of today as a "peace keeping force."
Europe traded with both the South and the North, and had a vested interest in keeping trade going. So if they felt that the war was going to drag on they would intervene and force peace in order to protect their interests. This forced peace would help the South, because it would keep them independent of the North until they could strengthen their military, and their enconomy, and keep let them be seen internationally as a seperate nation.

A place to sell cotton. Possible military assistance. Diplomatic recognition.
Mostly a place to sell cotton.
Which was harder and harder for the south to achieve as the war progresses since England began getting cotton for less hassle and money from Egypt and elsewhere.

Trade, Military assistance and recognition of their sovereignty.
Trade to maintain their economy. Military assistance to help with their war. Recognition so they would be treated as an independent state. This would have turned the civil war into a war of aggression by the north.

If you mean during the Civil War, they wanted financial backing. They didn't think that Europe could afford to allow the "King of Cotton" to be defeated, as the vast majority of their textile industry was fueled by the south.
Unfortunately for them, Europe found itself quite capable of supporting its own textile needs, and they recieved no help from either of the stated countries.
