here is a copy of their email. they recently bought a book from me, and want to upgrade the shipping.

"Comment/ Question: I wanted to upgrade to expedited shipping.
Can I just send you the extra $2.00 via paypal. I'll actually send
you $3.00
to cover for the paypal fee. It would be important for me to have it
sent via
expedited shipping instead of media mail.
Sorry about the inconvenience. All I need to send you the extra
amount via
paypal is your email address and I will send the amount right away.
Thanks again."

I didnt know if this may be a scam or what. I have never given my email out to any one for this particular purpose. Thank you for any advice that you may have.

first i'd just like to know more background information, like what company were you using (i.e. ebay, amazon). and also, can you clarify?

did he/she already send the $3? or are they planning to and want your email, which is why you are reluctant and are asking a question on yahoo.

if it is the first case just check your paypal account to see if it's there or not. if not, check again with your buyer and ask them to confirm your paypal account is correct and all that good stuff.

if it is the second case, i don't see any harm in giving him/her your paypal email, but just in case, check their reputation. if its decent and trustable, go right ahead. if it isn't, and you don't feel comfortable about giving your paypal, then don't. i doubt there is much to lose.

but in the end, remember to make sure you have received the money before you send via expedited shipping. and anyway, if you don't want to go through any of this, just send it via media mail like you originally planned (assuming he paid for the actual item already).

i'll adjust this response accordingly when you respond, thanks.

That's how paypal operates, using your e-mail address. That way your personal financial information is NEVER revealed to a third party. You don't want anyone to have your bank details or credit card account numbers and PayPal isolates you from that risk.

This could only be a scam if the other party has your PayPal logon credentials. Of course you should NEVER give those to anyone for any reason, not even to PayPal!

If you're at all worried, just reset your PayPal password to a nice long, complex one and give them your e-mail addie. This is a low risk proposition, don't be worried about it.

Do you have a paypal account? I assume you do, but it is true that someone needs to have an email address to make a payment to paypal. You can create a secondary (free)email address and add it to you paypal account, then give the person that email address so that you can protect the privacy of your main email address. It doesn't sound like a scam as long as you receive the payment prior to sending out the book.

first of all..in case you're advertising over a undeniable volume and not in basic terms issues around your place, you ought to record your earnings to the IRS. despite in case you flow your money, all your archives are nevertheless accessible on ebay and paypal. The IRS is cracking down on ebay agencies that dont record earnings.

I wouldn't give it out. If you know the person it's dealing with you can consider it, but if fyou dont jsut ignore/report it.
