I believe that there is a slightly higher risk of breast cancer (very slight difference), which drops back to normal risk after you stop taking the pill. It also lowers the risk for ovarian and uterine cancers.

If you smoke, taking contraceptive pills will increase all the risks associated with smoking, and decreases the effectiveness of the pill. Smokers should either quit smoking or use a different form of birth control.
If you don't smoke then the only risks you really have to worry about are a slightly increased chance of getting a blood clot. The normal rate of getting blood clots in people not on birth control pills is 1 in 10,000. On the pill it is between 3 or 8 in 10,000. But the risk of getting a blood clot while you are pregnant is 1 in 200, so preventing yourself from getting pregnant probably outweighs the risk.
I've been on the pill for almost 10 years.

Oral contraceptives may increase your risk of having blood clots especially if you are a smoker as well, but I think that it would actually decrease your risk in getting certain types of cancer.

Actually, it decreases your risk for ovarian cancer. It also mildly decreases your risk for breast cancer. It does this because with the pills it keeps your bodies hormones in check and creates a nice balance in your body.
