If a adult man hits an adult woman, it's considered so much worse than if the woman hits the man. When I was in high school, even the toughest guys I knew said that they would never hit a girl.
The basic idea of this is that women are still considered weaker than men. However, if women want equality shouldn't each action be considered no better or worse than the other?

I have noticed several answers that state the laws are applied equally. They are not!

We have the Violence Against Women Act which by the very name of it shows our domestic violence laws only protect women. (it was the use of this act that allowed The Duke team to be charged without one shred of evidence a crime had occurred)

All laws should apply to everyone equally. If not, then we have special classes of citizens which would be a violation of the United States Constitutions "equal protecting clause.

Think for a moment, when see that someone has been been arrested for domestic violence who do we often think was arrested? The husband or the wife? When we hear of a child abuser who do we think of the most? Mom or dad?

In reality, the domestic violence abuser is just as likely to be a woman as it is the man. In child abuse, it is more likely. We would not know this from society.

It is true that more women get hurt in domestic violence but often it is when a man is tired of being battered and hits back that they do get hurt. (We know some men do not need an excuse to abuse just as some women do not) The same laws should apply even if one is stronger then the other. After all, If someone shoots someone with a .22, do they get a lesser charge then if the used a .44 or a .357?

Edit....I need to point out that I know of several men in my town that were arrested for defending himself. One was at a lake when an unknown woman came up to him and started beating on him. He hit her once to stop her. Two others grapped a woman's arm to stop her from doing them harm (one was trying to stab him) and because the men grapped their arm, they were the ones arrested. Two of these men are fire fighters yet the city and the mayor has hung them out to dry. The mayor has his "commission on domestic violence" but even this is one sided.

YES the laws should be the same. I had to grow up watching my Mom hit and beat my Dad. I hated that as much as when he hit and beat my Mom. the bottom line when 2 GROWN people hit each other over really STUPID things that is the time to get help.

NO fight should ever result in hitting NONE. GOD Loves BOTH Men & Women He values them BOTH when will we learn to do this?

BUT Yes the laws should be the same. God Bless

I think a lot of people hit it right on the head. The laws themselves are equal (except for domestic violence) but their enforcement is not. This is a real shame, because everyone should be treated equally in this day and age.

The laws are written to apply equally to men and women, but it's judges, jurys, prosecutors, and police that decide how the laws are applied. That's where the division between men & women becomes apparent.

They SHOULD be the same...and they may be written that way...but they are definitely not carried out that way. There is serious inequity with respect to violence laws...so when are the feminists going to acknowledge that this one is in their favor and stand up for the equality it deserves?

I totally agree, and don't get me wrong I'm totally on your side, but statistically it's this: the guys tend to get hurt less. It's not a sexist thing or anyhting, but guys do tend to be bigger, more poweful, etc than women, so if a girl pusses a guy as hard as she can odds are it won't be as bad as if the guy pushes the girl as hard as he can.

But yes, I do agree.

Anyone of either gender can pick up a knife, gun, shovel or whatever blunt instrument is closest. Yes, the laws should be exactly the same.
Good luck

It should be based on degree of injury (or potential for injury) inflicted rather than gender.

If a woman swings at a guy and breaks his nose, the penalty should be the same as if a man does the same.

i don't understand..i'd think of you need to choose for attack quotes. women look to think of that right here interior the states too. it fairly is actual as adult males we are taught on no account to hit a woman...i'd on no account hit a woman. i'd enable a woman get away with slapping me yet whilst a woman thinks that she would be in a position to basically walk up and clock me without me knocking her on her a$$? then think of returned... nevertheless i a million/2 to assert some american women....i think of ought to fully kick my as$ so i think of that ladies could be purely as brutal with actual stuff as adult males.

Absolutely.

If someone assaults me, I will defend myself. I could care less about their gender.

"Oh, but you're so much bigger than she is..."

Well, she should have thought about that before she attacked someone twice her size.

I'm not saying I'd necessarily apply the same amount of force to stop someone half my size, but don't be fooled- gender is NOT even in the equation.
