You should probably go to your doctor for a checkup at 50, and mention to him or her that you are having trouble sleeping, and you just want to make sure everything is alright with your sugar and the rest of your body. You could have sleep apnea. It shows up in men your age more often than you would imagine. I would not ask for nor accept samples of sleeping pills from him/her. The drug reps are all to happy to get you to try their products, when you may have a hormone imbalance, sleep apnea, or just a poor diet with too much caffine in it. If your doctor doesn't suggest any of these things and just offers a sample, find another doctor, and fast! With diabetes, you need a much more thorough and thoughful physician to take care of you as you get older.
Watch what you eat. Don't eat after 8PM. Give your body a chance to digest the food you ate for dinner. Can you turn down the A/C at night a few degrees? Do you need a new mattress? How about some soft music in the background. An air filter to block outside sounds? Excercise during the day, prior to dinner would help too, and it would be good for your sugar problem as well. Watch your caffine intake from all sources. Look for hidden caffine in chocolate, tea, candies, and coffee of course. Don't drink soda, even diet soda with caffine in it at all. Speak to your family doctor about what you can do natually to help you sleep.
If you feel you have to take something to help you sleep, I would never take a prescription sleeping pill. Many of the sleeping pills have bad side effects, some are not reported, but after working night shift in a hospital for over 20 years and seeing for myself, I would never take a sleeping pill. If I cannot sleep, sometimes I will take benedryl. I have allergies and I cannot take it in the daytime since it makes me so drowsy, so it makes a perfect night time sleep aid. Tylenol PM, and all the other PM meds have benedryl in them.
Good luck. Sweet dreams.

I have been using melatonin and it has been working great! I have not experienced any side effects and I like it a hundred times more than the Ambien that I was using. I pasted some info for you below:
" Melatonin is a natural hormone that regulates sleep. During daylight, the pineal gland in the brain produces an important neurotransmitter called serotonin. (A neurotransmitter is a chemical that relays messages between nerve cells.) But at night, the pineal gland stops producing serotonin and instead makes melatonin. This melatonin release helps trigger sleep.
The production of melatonin varies according to the amount of light you're exposed to; for example, your body produces more melatonin in a completely dark room than in a dimly lit one.
Melatonin supplements appear to be helpful for people whose natural sleep cycle has been disturbed, such as travelers suffering from jet lag. Melatonin may also be helpful in various other sleep disorders.
Based on early reports that melatonin levels decline with age, the hormone was briefly marketed as a kind of fountain of youth. However, newer evidence suggests that melatonin levels do not decline with age after all."

I just go over insomnia for 4-6 years with drinking hot water daily, sipping all day like hot tea
I filtered cold tap water then boiled it and drank it hot, not warm and boiled it in ceramic pot, not steel, put it in thermos and sipped throughout day, it's more important frequently than to drink a lot at once
It took about three days and still going strong

Melatonin
It is all natural and has no adverse side effects, and can be found at your local drug store. melatonin is the chemical we produce to help us reach rem sleep. As we age our body produces less. This is a cheap and all natural way to get the sleep you need
