The claimed reasons were because our president said Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and might destroy the US any minute. When no such weapons were found the mission changed to having wanted to save the Iraqis from the tyranny of Saddam Hussein. I think it is pretty obvious that there were two real reasons--1, Mr. Bush's personal hatred for Saddam Hussein, and 2, for oil. The US has made it clear it will not pull troops out until the Iraq government has conceded important oil rights to American oil companies.
