I saw this movie and thought that the mermaid idea was an interesting twist on what would have been an otherwise boring plot.

Sure. It was a fun movie. Tom Hanks went on to become a megastar - didn't do much for Darryl Hannah's career, though.

Yes. Tom Hanks last good movie. He went downhill from there.
