Nothing, not even grass, seems to grow very well under a Pine tree. Does anyone know any tricks? What is it that kills the growth from under it?

I find Lilly of the Valley, Bleeding Hearts, or hostas are a good start. You can try any shade loving plant. You may need to add a bit of good compost to get it started. It needs plenty of water to get it's roots established.

Any plant that likes acidic conditions will grow under pine trees. Fallen pine needles acidify the soil under pine trees as they decompose. Anything in the Ericaceae family will do wonderfully under pine trees: Azaleas, rhododendrons, erica, blueberries, etc. It depends on the zone you live in as well, but those are a start!
