I live on a large two acre property. we have a main house, a guest house, a tennis court and a ballroom on the premises and we don't have a designated backyard. We do have a lawn and a grass field. because we have wood floors and no one has time to potty train our dog (we got him when he was three and it's hard to train an old dog), we are forced to keep him locked up for hours every day while we go to school and work in a small 6' by 2' "pen." if anyone has any training tips or ideas and suggestions on how to install a fence somewhere on the property, please answer!

Well first I have to say shame on you for getting a dog you don't have time for!

Second go to home depot and they can show you how to install an invisiable fence for your dog and that way you don't have to see the fence...i get the impression you wouldn't like that.

Good luck to your dog!

We fenced in some of our yard for our dogs.
Used 2x4 no climb fence and cemented the posts in due to clay ground and put a gate big enough to get a mower in to keep the yard mowed.
There are also dog houses in there for the dogs during bad weather when we aren't home. They are inside/out dogs.

Also I know from experience old/older dogs are not hard to train. If you don't have time for the dog please give him to someone who does. The size pen he is in is just way to small for him. A little patience and reinforcement in house training can be a breeze but you must be consistent. You must also know the signs he exhibits when he needs to potty and pay attention to them.
When he starts exhibiting those signs put his leash on and while taking him out say "lets go potty" and walk him until he does. After a few trips he will get the hang of it and so will you.
I house trained a 7 yr old dog with no problems and 2 other abused 1 yr old dogs with no problems either. You must be consistent and do not punish when they have an accident in the house. Just clean the mess up and take them out because they may not be done.

You can build a bigger fence out from the pen and providing the pen has a dog house just extend the fence from his current area. Mark off an area starting on each side of the pen that looks like it will be big enough for him to run and get plenty of exercise while he is in there....1/4 acre would be fine.

If you have the know how and the funds build the fence yourself or find someone who would do it for a reasonable price.
Just make sure he can run and get the exercise he needs. 1/4 acre might not sound like much but is plenty for a dog to live in. In the event he is a digger after the fence is up let the grass grow under the fence. It might be unsightly but will prevent him from digging out. I keep our property neatly trimmed but the fence to our dog yard has grass growing in it. This prevents our 3 dogs from escaping or getting hung up under the fence and hurting or killing themselves. If they can't get under it no problem. Also when he is in his yard he should be allowed to do what he wants even digging. Ours dig in theirs all the time and other than watching out for holes while mowing it doesn't hurt a thing. Also unless you remove his waste it will be well fertilized as I can attest to that. The grass in their yard in 3 yrs time is 4 times as thick as it was and gets mowed on average 2 times a week.

Hope some of this helps or gives you some ideals you can use.

A good way to train dogs not to go in the house is to rub their faces in the urine...it's nasty but it's how my cousin trains his dogs.... But i think a more gentle approach would be to send him to obedience school, especially if nobody has time to train him...

You are too wealthy and busy to give dogs the attention they deserve. Give them to someone that will give them the proper love and attention they need. Dogs are not just things, they are like little humans, and need love just like we do.
