It was part of the treaty to end the Spanish-American War in 1898.
After a bit we gave back all of it to the Cubans except for our base at Guantanamo Bay and some land around it.

Cuba has never been a possession of the US, we helped win it's Independence from Spain in 1898, but never controlled the government, we have a lease agreement for Guantanamo bay, going back to that time frame, but not to have military power of Cuba, but for our National military world interest. The Monroe Doctrine set the area in the western Hemisphere that basically stated that foreign nations will not rule over or control or invade any in the Americas, or we would get involved, sort of like a "big" brother. this resulted from England,Spain and France and others using weaker central American and south American, as well as trying to re-occupy the US and Canada. Cuba turned Communist in late 50s, soon because we boycotted this betrayal of it's people by having once a gain an autocratic government, they turned to the Soviet Union for trade and military support. Now that there Support is gone, they are alone, and soon Castro will die, and Cuba will more than likely oust the communist regime and be free once again "libre Cuba!"

The whole island is not. Just Guantanamo Bay and the surrounding area of the Army/Navy base there.
