I would recommend checking the trade publications like Hollywood weekly or Orlando Weekly etc. Also, a nice new resource is Craigslist and depending on your locale ( I currently reside in Orlando so conventional choices are not as available.) there are listings for various projects and casting agencies. Beware these can run to the very low and even no budget productions. I used to live in Hollywood and there is always some new project happening.

Unless you have an agent, or, a friend with an agent, it may be difficult to get casting information.
Look for auditions on Backstage.com and ActorsAccess.com
If you live in a large city, do an online search, there may be an Office of Television and Film Commission, where you live.

Yes, some good advice. While yes, agents have the most information and keep it to themselves and their clients, you can sign up at actors access,http://www.actorsaccess.com/ where there are breakdowns of roles that are being cast. You can submit yourself for union and non-union work. If you live somewhere like LA or NYC you can go to pay to audition type of places like TVI and audition and get to know casting directors and agents.
