The light could come on if the input voltage from the the A/C low and high pressure switches was out of range, but not the clutch. (Either of these switches if bad could prevent power to the clutch coil.) Then causing u to think the clutch was bad. Good Luck.

For some vehicles, low pressure detected in the system will trigger the check engine light.

No it is for your engine performance and emission control. Example/ you leave your car running and fuel it, and it will turn your check engine light because it detected a leaky gas cap (emission control system). I hope this helps?

depending on the year, or if it was obd2 or not,hell , ive looked at the list of codes, and i see none related to the ac.
