The main reason for mature ratings is age appropriate material. There are certain things children should not see until they are mature enough to understand them and old enough to know right from wrong. For example, the game "Grand Theft Auto" and its sequels feature violent behavior, criminal activity, and questionable morals. Given that children are apt to immitate behaviors and actions they see, it is not a good idea to let children play the games.

The rating systems are just a tool to help parents and guardians understand what is in the movies their child sees or games the child plays. It is ultimately up to the parent to decide if the child is mature enough for that entertainment.

It is done for parents and moviegoers to have a general idea as to what some of the content would be. If I have a seven year old, and a movie gets an R rating for excessive purverse language and nudity, I don't want her to see it.

Video games are about three times harsher on ratings then movies are, Halo is rated M for mature because it depicts green blood, that is it, green blood, and it shouldn't be played by anyone under the age of seventeen because of green blood. I don't think so.......
