i read it but i don't remember it that specifically. do they act upset? bored? resentful? do they feel they don't belong there? are any of them in denial that they are even in hell at all? are they regretful? do they only think about their prior lives? i'd distinguish between those who seem accepting of their fate and those who are resentful, regretful, or rebellious. and what is hell for sartre? other people. that's why they are all stuck together.

The idea of Satre's hell is that you spend eternity with the things you fear or despise the most. The interaction of the three is the dynamic that Sartre is trying to show. It is a constant series of "two against one" team ups. The three of them doing their best to isolate one person. They never really do take much responsibility - they are constantly criticizing each other's lives and blaming others. They spend time poking and prodding each other's sins and lives as their connection to Earth grows farther and farther away from them until all they have is each other. However, at the end when the man asks to leave and the door flies open - they refuse to leave. The question of the day is ... why? When you figure that out, you truly understand existentialism. Each character wants something from another person but doesn't get it. This makes it very difficult to live in the place that they are because they cannot escape and yet they continually will not give of oneself so that another can benefit. Therefore, these characters are self-seeking people who do not give of themselves easily.
