A walkoff refers to any play where the home team (because they have the bottom of the inning) gets ahead in the ninth inning or later. It's called a walkoff because the game is over at that point, the rest of the inning is not played. By the way, it doesn't have to be a hit. The only MLB game I have ever been to was Diamondbacks vs. Dodgers at Bank One Ballpark (now Chase Field) and the Diamondbacks won it after the Dodgers' pitcher issued a walk with the bases loaded (you could call it a walkoff walk!)

When a player gets a hit or a home run that wins the game, the team that's in the field "walks off" because the game is over.

It doesn't have to be a hit. A walk-off refers to any play that ends the game in the bottom of the 9th or subsequent inning. It refers to the fact that the defense simply walks off the field.

Yes, the defense. The runners and batter-runner must, by the rules, touch every appropriate base or the runs don't count. Ask Robin Ventura about that one.

Kenny Rogers ended the Mets post-season in 1999 by issuing a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the 9th. And Todd Stottlemyre's first career shutout came when Jim Abbot issued a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth. Both were walk-off walks.
