It sounds like you are a little late for a lawyer. It sounds like you are defending what you did and looking for a way out. That is nice, but you have to accept responsibility first. Just how long have you stayed clean? Why should anyone believe you now? It is up to you to convince us that what you are saying is really true.

You cannot go into this without legal help. Ask the court to appoint a Public Defender for your case.

You need to communicate a few things to your Public Defender and to the judge. If you get an opportunity to meet with your Public Defender before your court appearance say the following, otherwise when you get into court tell the judge how sorry you are, and how ashamed you are, (don't bs the judge they can see it). If you are in a program, tell the court about the program. If the court does not recognize that program, beg the court to put you in a program that the court approves. Offer to make FULL restitution to your friend for the money you took, AND out loud in the courtroom apologize to you friend (no matter if she is there or not).

You can get through this. Your friend wants you to get better. If you truly want to show this friend how sorry you are then get clean and stay clean.

If you have no money you can ask for a public defender. They will be able to assist you in getting treatment to get clean and sober. Also they will represent you in court. In the mean time, be grateful your friend pressed charges. You didn't get caught - you got rescued from going down the toilet into an endless cycle of drugs and ripping off yourself and the people who love you most. Anyone who is seriously getting better doesn't write what you just did. How long have you been clean, are you attending regular meetings with a 12-step program. If so, what does your sponsor say? My gut instinct from what you are writing is that you are just a self-centered little con artist who is hoping to weasel his way out of a situation that is making you face the consequences of your actions. Even if your friend forgives you, she shouldn't deny you the opportunity to "face the music" with regard to what you have done. You are incredibly lucky, you could be facing federal felony fraud and embezzlement charges if her bank had decided to press charges.

Tell the judge you want an attorney. One will be appointed for you. All you have to do is ask.
