to do background criminal check first before getting someone in for interview. The company claims it has federal govt contracts and needs to do the checks first before getting the interview. Is it legal and ok for a company to do that?

Would you give all your info without knowing there are chances of a job offer?

btw, the company is obviously paying some vendor to do all this so its costing them too.

Yes, it's costing them, but this is rather normal in government contracting circles. They will eventually have to do a background check, and the government will do their own check, and it costs them a ton of money to go further without having some decent assurance that the individual they're interested in will pass the BI. You need to sign a consent form for the background to be ordered and completed, but if you refuse to sign, they're unlikely to go further with the interview and subsequent steps. There is no law about timing of the check.

Yes, it is legal and maybe required under there contract if they do work for the federal government. I would be honest, the system is not full proof but it is pretty good. My husband bounced a check in 1989 and it came up on a recent background check. They did not hold it againist him but it still came up.

Yes it is perfectly legal for them to do that. Read the application that you filled out carefully. It probably had a consent clause in it that said by either signing or turning in the application form that you consented to a background check.

Yes, especially if they have a Federal Gov't Contract. It is required that they do, and they will. The bkgrd ck will determine your status with that company.

Yep, mine did it for me. Wouldn't you want to work for a company that does this and be among non-criminals?
