Bloody Mary is no myth. This refers to Mary, Queen of Scots , whose short 5 year reign who tried to restore Catholicism in England was a period of great bloodshed as she trird to force her hand against the English people. She reigned in the period of the 1550's after the reign of Henry VIII and before Elizabeth I.

Mary Tudor, sister to Elizabeth I and daughter to Henry VIII was called Bloody Mary because of the persecution of the Protestants during her reign. She also had many of them killed, hence the name. It is interesting to note though that many historians don't think she deserves the name. After all her sister Elizabeth also had many Catholics killed.
