Some of the best movies I've ever seen are subtitled. I don't really mind reading them.

Most people just aren't used to them. They can be tricky at first, but after a while you get used to them. Especially if they are done right!
These are the same people that won't watch any movie that isn't in color too. They think it's going to be boring!
I prefer subbed. I think the lips not syncing up bothers me, and distracts me, more than reading! I can't help but giggle a little when I watch an obviously dubbed film. Although it is nice to have the option on DVDs so when I just don't feel like reading, I can just kick back and relax and listen.
And there are just some things that get left out in the dubbed versions in an effort to keep the lips in sync as much as possible. The subtitles usually make more sense than what they end up saying in the dubs!

I don't think it's a matter of being lazy. I think it's a matter of reading skills.
I've noticed some people can't read and watch a screen at the same time. And other's can't read fast enough to figure out what's going on.
I've had a few people I've had to read the subtitles in movies out loud for. (rented movies, not in theatres that would be just rude)

Yes. Foreign films are high on my list of movies from Netflix. I just returned the Oscar nominated Swedish film "As it is in Heaven", starring Michael Nyquist. I agree about reading the subtitles. I don't find it difficult at all to understand the plot and the acting in most foreign films is outstanding.

I don't mind subtitles. Lot of people don't have the right attention span for the subtitles or the fact in today society have to many people who are lazy about reading and that is why they watch movies so, they don't have to read.

its not that we're lazy, it's that it's distracting as hell. i've watched movies in english with spanish subtitles and the words just pop out an caputure my attention. i can't help but read them and so i miss like half the movie tryin to understand and read at the same time. that is why i prefer to ignore them completely.

Because its distracting trying to read the words and watch the movie. When you watch a movie you should be able to listen and hear it not have to read it. If i wanted to read i could just read a book but when i wanna watch a movie i wanna be able to enjoy without having to read the bottom

my sister doesn't like subtitled movies because she says that you focus on the movie or you focus on the subtitles, that you can't do both. As for me, I live in Mexico and have to watch all the movies with subtitles , because it's that or watching it in Spanish, and although my Spanish is better than my english, y don't like movies in spansih. I like subtitles even if it is a chinese movie i will watch it. I also watched pan's labyrinth (in spanish), what a great movie!!! it's worth watching even if it is subtitled

you see it as being lazy--i see it as a distraction.
if i want to read, i pick up a book. having to read dialogue while watching a movie is counterintuitive to me--and obviously to many others.
not necessarily saying that anyone is lazy--but if anyone is, i say it is the film distributor. dub the movie in the language of the country viewing the film--using credible voice actors and exact translation of course.
