Fulgencio Baptista was a murdering dictator who controled Cuba prior to Castro. But he was a friend of the USA, and allowed Cuba to be the USA's playground for prostitution, gambling and drugs. After Castro's revolution overthrew Baptista, Castro's socialist platform frightened the USA government. It was during President Eisenhower's time in office and the USA was involved in the cold war with Russia. The USA feared Cuba would allow Russia to gain a foothold in the Americas and imposed an embargo to force Castro out.
We still have the embargo because the Cubans who fled Castro's Cuba have been a powerful political force mainly in Florida.

Because the United States is an imperialist military empire (737 military bases in 130 countries including one on Cuban soil!) and a sore loser holding a resentment for 48 years.
In November of 2006 for the 15th consecutive year, the United Nations General Assembly approved a non-binding measure criticizing Washington's embargo against Fidel Castro's Cuba. The vote this time was virtually the same as last year: 183-4, with only Israel and two small Pacific island states voting with the United States. For the 15th staight year it was hard to find this story in the U.S. Corporate media; just as it was hard this week to find honest reporting on the fact that Iraqi Parliament approved legislation, with 144 out of 275 members voting yes, asking for a timetable for withdrawal of U.S. Troops from Iraq.

Because Fidel Castro is a sworn enemy of the U.S., with a history of pointing missles at this country, and supporting anti-American revolutionaries throughout the hemisphere. Also, Cuba is only 90 miles away.
Relations with China were ice cold for years too when Mao was alive. Trading with them is a fairly recent thing. They do it because it is more profitable for them to do business with us, than go to war against us. Safer too.
As soon as Castro dies, relations with Cuba will normalize pretty quickly.

It may have started out as a fear of communism but that was a long time ago. My guess is that Cuba has mining and oil production potential and in time some US government leader is going to encourage an invasion to gain control over it.

Because men are extremely pig-headed.
(You might apply this answer to many of our problems. Don't get me wrong, I love men and they do bring a great deal to the table. However, they are, as I said, extremely pig-headed).

All goes back to JFK and Castro. I wish they'd lift that sh*t so I can go on vacation there.
