Our friends moved from Boston to LV and hate every second of it.
First, you live in a desert. It's hot, esp in the summer.
Two, everything is pretty much the same. Huge tracks of housing and pre-planned communities. One time, our friends got lost trying to get home, because all the houses look alike. It's like not being able to find your car in the parking lot.
Third, the population is growing so fast that services are stretched. Schools are overcrowded.
Fourth, if you are used to friendly people, you are in a rude awakening. Huge influx of strangers all the time means you never really get to know a lot of people.
Fifth, much of the population is relatively poor. It's a company town - everybody is a bar tender, waitress or works in a hotel.
Sixth, you will miss the change of seasons. Right now, you say you'll never miss the snow, but the holidays never feel the same. Santa on a catus just doesn't work.
From talking to my friends, they do like that it is relatively inexpensive (compared to Boston) to live. Meals, cars, taxes, living expense, home prices, etc.
I'm sure people will tell you differently, but LV is a nice place to visit for a few days, but don't live there!

I know Vegas is famous for the dry heat but I actually prefer the hot, humid summers over the long, never-ending summers here. If you don't like the cold weather- it still gets cold here at night b'c the temp drops so much by nightfall. But if you like the snow you can still head out to Mount Charleston to see it.
For it being the service-industry capital of the world- the service is not great- people everwhere are rude and service in a lot of places isn't that great.
I absolutely hated it here when I first moved here. Everyone told me just to wait, it takes at least a year to get used to living in Vegas. Those people were right, I finally feel like this is home and I love the fact that there is so much to do.
I don't know about pricing here vs Chicago but what I did notice in a lot of the newer areas is that the houses are going to be a lot closer together than what you are used to. Some nicer areas that you may want to check out are Northwest(brand new area), Anthem, Seven Hills, & Green Valley areas. These areas are more neighborhood-like. The Green Valley area is the most homey feeling to me just b/c there is a lot of grass and lots of green vs the desert look.

been here 8yrs off and on and yes there is some bad things housing sucks but there are some nice places west side or south or far north inter city not so great. driving is a pain if your not sure where you are going but if you check out a place where a bouts its not that hard to find after you have done it a few times . you hear from people or ask what street to take to get some where faster there is tricks to getting around. and like all cities big as Vegas. i am from a small town in Tennessee and i love it in Vegas. always some where to go and you can always find some place open any time your ready to go. does get really hot but mostly only for a few weeks or a months of really hot which is easy to fix just don't go out at those times. hardly any rainy days not many snow days. been in many states and lived in a few small towns i say you can beat Las vegas if you like the sunshine.

I currently live in Las Vegas and LOVE IT!! Depending on what type of housing you are looking for....If you are looking for a apartment, you can easily get a 2 bedroom, 2 bath for like $800.00 in a nice area. You can get around very easily!!! There are walmarts and targets everywhere. In the summer it is very hot but Vegas has great winter, even get snow sometimes. Casinos are open 24 hours, so there is always something to do!! I would highly recommened Vegas to EVERYBODY!!

While I like Nevada, Las Vegas is a rather difficult place to live. The neighborhoods off of the strip are not the best. If you can afford to live in one of the new high rise luxury condos they are building it could be pretty nice. However, I love to visit Vegas but don't think I would like to live there.
