It just takes time and practice (and perhaps an English Coach), if you really want to get rid of it. I've known lots of people who have extreme accents growing up and have lost them along the way. But don't be afraid to keep it, and show who you are. : )

Well, it's not that big of a deal to have an accent, really, as long as people can understand your English. My mom moved here (to America) from Poland about 19 years ago and has a bit of an accent, but most people understand her just fine. :)

I'd say to get rid of an accent, or rather, take on the accent of the people you're trying to sound like, you should try listen to native speakers and get acquainted with the sounds they make. Some stores might sell CD's or websites might have pronunciation guides if you need help. And I hope that thing about my mom still having an accent after 19 years didn't throw you off, hehe. There's a British girl that moved here to America last year and her accent's begun to wear away because she's been among people who've spoken American English for so long, so I know that it can go away over time.

Good luck. It's not that bad to have an accent either. Some people like it and think it is unique, and if you like it, that's even more important. But since you wanted help about it, I hope this helps if even a little. :)

Everyone has some kind of accent. Even in the U.S, the northern speak different than the southerners. I would more focus on your communication skills and getting your point across. The important thing is,if people understand what you are saying. I would think of your accent as your trademark. It is what makes you unique

Accents can be very charming.
If you live in an English speaking country for a while, it was diminish, but you may not lose it completely.

My grandfather kept his Irish brogue for 60+ years.
Don't try to change.

First you should learn to use spell check.

I was raised in the southern US and had a very bad accent, I learned to speak proper English by listening to news programs on TV and going to school

hummm you mean ACCENT?
I have it, too. A good way to speak like local people is to watch TV and repeat everything they say, exactly the way they say. It helped me learning foreign languages, and speaking better too. I hope I gave you the best answer, 'cause this method helped me!!
** also asking people to correct me when I say something wrong, this is VERY important!
Good luck!

It doesn't matter, a lot of us like to hear an accent. Just make sure people can understand you, and keep the accent.

Accent elimination programs will help you with that. You can usually find a good one at any bookstore in the language section. I work in radio, and we learn an artificial "accent." called Standard American English. Accents aren't welcome in most newsrooms.

you don't have to get rid of your accent. i think that accents are fine unless you have a problem communicating with others. everyone has an accent so don't even worry about it.
