I think it went both ways.
One the one hand, modern sanitation technology does a lot to stem the spread of diseases
but too many of today's mass produced foods have been modified to in a manner that reduces their food value or even makes them unhealthy
Walking to a destination was probably an older and more healthier way to travel, but then long distance travel put quite a strain on personal health.
Large industrial farming complexes most likely make more food available, but due to certain modern economic practices, that doesn't mean people are not starving anymore.
My personal opinion is that TV, Video games, and even the web can be unhealthy when substituted for normal human activities.
In the end, it's up to the individual to create his or her own health.

Sure. Most people died in their 30s and 40s.
As to the "wholesomeness", I may take issue with how you have described it. It wasn't until this past century that women were protected from rape from family members, neighbours and such. Back in the day, children had no rights against anyone who would abuse them.
We tend to see the past with "rose-coloured" glasses.
In the "old days", education was reserved for the elite. The "wholesome" were uneducated, enslaved and kept poor. We know have a situation where literacy rates in some of the poorest nations are close to 100%. We are doing better as a species over time.
In the old days, many health issues that you have survived would have likely killed you. A cold, an influenza, an infection, the sanitation of the time killed many. The plague killed so many in Europe due to the "wholesomeness" of not having adequate sanitation on that continent. Small pox, scurvy, well, I think you get the idea.

The concept of wholesomeness as a utopia once reached by modern men is a farce at best. Thankfully, my grandmother was a very informative person prior to her passing. I had a chance to hear about all the drunken debauchery and immoral activities that tookplace in her day, the stories that never made headlines but did make the sewing circles. If anything, the society today doesn't make an attempt ( or perhaps fails to cover) how amoral humanity really is.

Technology its self offers more wholesome possibility or possibility to become wholesome, but self estrangement is epidemic as self as property falls into the question 'whose'.

Depends on your definition of wholesome really..
but from a mainstream position no. Before internet porn there were magazines, and before that there were prostitutes.

Unfortunately some do no use pre-diabetic condition as a wake up call and reform their life style. Actually, for me the life style as a diabetic has been very rewarding and my condition is very much under control and my overall health has never been better.
