It's Army lieutenant Philip Nolan who was upset that Aaron Burr was tried for treason. Nolan was tried as an accomplice. It was actually a fictional work published in the Atlantic Monthly in 1863, a story by Edward Everett Hale. Although the story alleges to the early 1800's, it is based on the upheaval of the Civil War. When he cursed the United States and said he never wanted to hear it again, the judge sentenced him to spend the rest of his life on war ships. Nolan relented in his old age.
In real life, there have been several "men without a country" because several have said that we should be world citizens, not just a citizen of one country. Now-a-days, lots of countries will allow dual citizenship under certain circumstances.
