This problems contains 4 terms:
6x
3
-x
23
You can only add like terms (terms containing the same variable parts). In this problem 6x and -x are like terms so you can add them
5x+3=23
You can move terms from one side of the equation to the other using the additive inverse (changing addition or subtraction to its opposite). In this problem our goal is to get the x alone on one side of the equal sign so we want to move the +3 to the other side.
5x = 23-3
5x = 20
After we move whole terms across the equal sign we can move parts of the remaining term. In this case we want to move the 5. Because the 5 is being multiplied by x we must use the multiplicative inverse (change multiplication to division)
x = 20/5
x=4

All equations are solved with the same method. First add like terms on each side of the equal sign. Then move whole terms. And finally move parts of terms to isolate the variable.

6x + 3 - x = 23
Combine like terms.
5x + 3 = 23
Subtract 3 from each side.
5x = 20
Isolate the variable by dividing by 5 on each side.
x = 4

Hope this helps!
