Harold Baines, with 2866 career hits. He played his last game on 27 Sep 2001.
Everyone ahead of him on the all-time career hits list is either in the HOF, still active, hasn't been retired for at least 5 years, or is under a lifetime suspension.
And thank you so much for recognizing that and reminding everyone that Rose isn't eligible.

You need to do a little more research before you give answers to your own question. Pete Rose has the most hits in the history of baseball with over 4,000, but he isn't in.

Um, yeah, it IS Rose and likely will be Rose for a long, long time.
Overlooking him... it's Harold Baines (2866).
1. Rose 4256 -- ineligible
20. Rickey Henderson 3055 -- eligible 2009
23. Rafael Palmeiro 3020 -- eligible 2011
28. Craig Biggio 2966 -- active
39. Barry Bonds 2868 -- active
40. Harold Baines 2866 -- first ballot 2007, received 5.3%, so his candidacy isn't too promising.

I believe the answer your looking for is Craig Biggio. He is next on the list under 3000 hits, right behind Roberto Clemente. Barry Bonds is right behind Biggio.

You asked for the number one player... you got it...Pete Rose. If you wanted the number two player you should have asked for the number two player.
