I think children should not get a full fledged, fully functional cell phone until they are at least old enough to work and help pay for the bill. Those cell phones they have now where you can only call pre-programmed numbers can be given to a child as soon as they show responsibility enough to keep track of things.

Well i feel that when teenagers are going to be leaving the house for more than just going to school and back, they should have a cell phone. I also agree with others that say that they should at least help to pay. Also the Maturity answer was great as well!

I think when they start driving. I'm sixteen, and sereously, teens don't need another reason to waste time! since I'm driving now, and gonna be on my own, and out of the house more, we think its important that call to keep in touch, and in case of emergency....up until now, I just borrowed my mom or dads when I left, but I wouldn't encorage kids having cells phones at a young ages, just another cause for troubles, fights (yes, fights) and a bunch more stuff that will pull your family apart! :o)

My daughter got one for her 14th birthday this year because she is a National Junior Beta student, doesn't argue with me, is in band and chorus, helps with the household chores, and is kind to her brother. I believe she earned it because she shows a great deal of maturity and is trustworthy. We share a family plan, and she never goes over. She's had the phone since January. She's a good kid.

Instead of an age, my opinion is that a child can only benefit from a cell phone when they understand when and whom to call, and receive calls from...

There is po magic age. They have to be mature and responsible. You have to be able to trust that they will use it appropriately. My daughter was 15. My son is only 11, and has asked, but he is too young yet.

12, and the circumstances would be to get in touch with them. I wouldn't let my daughter leave home without hers. It gives a sense of security to both of us.
