I prefer freshwater because I love to breed fish, just as many different species as possible. There is no way I could really pick a favorite freshwater fish, there are just too many I like. For saltwater I always have loved moray eels and kept one for quite a few years.

Most fish will die if they are put in the wrong type of water eg a saltwater fish in fresh water. There are diadromous fish such as eels and salmon that spend parts of their life cycles in saltwater and parts in freshwater. I'd say that some certain fish would need specific salinity. Global warming is melting the polar ice caps and messing with the salinity of some seas, not to mention raising the water temperature which is very bad for some fish.

Saltwater fish are amazing, but they also cost a fortune.
Freshwater and most brackish fish don't cost quite so much and are a lot easier to maintain.

All fish tanks should be run (a few weeks for freshwater and a month+ for saltwater depending on the type) before putting any fish in to get helpful bacteria that keep the fish alive growing.

Unless you want to learn a lot about fish, stick with freshwater.

salt water fish are very very pretty. their color are richer than freshwater fish. they like to play hide and seek in the corals. salt water are just so much better! but the price are so much higher!
most important thing is that, you need to know how much time you have for the fish. if u dun have too much time. go with a freshwater fish like a guppy, they are very easy to take care of, and they are very colorful and playful also. if you want to have some excitement. buy a couple of male and female in a steady tank. you will have TONS of baby guppies in a month or two. it's fun exciting and it's very rewarding

I am more of a freshy lover. I like the platys, bettas and guppies. Also I think that salt water tanks are fairly finicky about water temps and where I live its likely that you will lose power so the heater will get shut off and then the water temp will drop a few degrees and you lose hundreds of dollars of fish. And fresh water fish are less expensive so if you happen to lose a few it doesnt cost you and arm and a leg to replace them.
