Cambridge is a bit more crowed than New Haven, but in either area you can have a vehicle.

I am assuming that you are talking about the Harvard, and Yale areas. Both have some public transportation, but if you are going to be going out of the city area, you will need access to a vehicle.

In cambridge no, because mass has a subway system. CT on the other hand, you need a car to unfortunately to get anywhere ever. My advice is to go to mass. New Haven its easily 150.00 a month to park a car, in a dingy parking lot that is not well lit, and parking downtown is virtually impossible to find on a sat. night. When the college crowd is out and about. If you want to get to discount stores like target, and walmart theres no question indeed that you will need a car.
I swear unless you live within 15 miles of new haven ct, there is no such thing as amtrak, or metro north. Everything runs along the shore line, or its right smack in the middle in waterbury which has no jobs at all.

In Cambridge, a car is not really needed. The T can take you just about everywhere in Boston. Parking is difficult and usually expensive. If your place comes with parking then maybe, but overall, not necessary. New Haven - yes. More necessary to have a car to get around. It is much more secluded and a car would be great to get around and out of New Haven every once in a while. Sounds like Yale or Harvard is the bigger decision...

I'm unsure about Cambridge, Mass, but New Haven is sort of a Catch 22. Parking is expensive if you're living and working downtown and there are plenty of busses to get you around there so you don't really NEED a car. However, if you want to leave New Haven to just about any other town, you absolutely need a car because public transportation just about stops at the city limits.
