I figure it is a simple fix, but I can't figure out what I need to change. I am using Explorer 7 if that helps.

Sounds like you have on tabbed browsing. You probably have multiple window open within 1 window. To close the window that you are in, hit the small red x on the right side of your browser, not the big one at the top of your window. That will close out your current window. A feature of IE7

Explorer 7 don't help anything it's the cause.I guess from what you say you have tabbed browsing on yours.I don't like it and really don't understand it in truth. So i disabled mine.In the toolbar setting's icon your avatar head on your toolbar next to green bookmark cross.Click it and then click on toolbar options, then uncheck the enable tabbed browsing at bottom of list.See if that's more of what you want.Good luck teacher.
