For the past few weeks my computer fan has been grinding and groaning and I assumed it was about to quit. Yesterday I cleaned all the dust and junk from the fan area. This evening the noise ground down and completely stopped. Has the fan quit or is it just not making noise anymore. How can I tell what is going on and what will happen to the computer without the fan working?

You could feel the air coming out of it, and yes if it doesn't work the processor over heats.

Feel the casing for vibration caused by the fan or any drift of hot air being blown out at a constant rate from the back of the CPU. It is highly unlikely that a fan making so much noise will suddenly repair itself and operate quietly. Better check it out.

The fan is quintessential to the work of a computer. Without one, the computer will overheat and damage may be done to it or it may start an electrical fire if left in that condition. You may hear sounds at first, rough ones that continue for a while. Your best chance is to take it to the store you bought it to have them look at it, talk to the person who made it (if it is a custom comp), or call the makers. Try to do this ASAP so that no harm is done.

If it is the processor cooling fan that is dead, most motherboards will just go on auto shutdown if no fan rotation is detected. Nothing else will be damaged.

If it is a case fan that ceased working, most PCs will still run. BUT case ventilation suffers and if PC is not in an airconditioned room, processor will overheat and cause random shutdowns (to prevent processor from getting toasted).

sounds familiar , when that happened to me, my computer's hard drive went out. So, its best to get it fixed before it gets worse. Good luck dear.
