Unfortunately, most people who offer thoughts about the Patriot Act have never read it. Instead, they parrot the thoughts of other people, who also have never read it. So my advice to you -- if you have not done so already -- read the Patriot Act first. This is the most significant step towards a meaningful discussion. See, for example, the text of the Patriot Act here: http://www.epic.org/privacy/terrorism/hr3162.html

A bunch of government lawyers and neocons got together and drew up a Patriot Act which gives certain protections to some and takes away certain rights from others. Of course the whole idea of the Act was to make it easier to catch the "bad guy".
But while they were at it, of course.they made certain that THEY (meaning the government) would be protected against some of the same actions that a regular citizen could well be arrested or 'detained' for.
I would offer that the Patriot Act is now looked upon as a temporary replacement of the Constitution..
In less than 550 days it can be repealed. Or at least amended so that EVERYONE - including those in government of course -- is subjected to the same laws, rules and policies.
You see I don't have a problem with it. but again, as long as it doesn't leave ANYONE out..
if you know what I mean .

The patriot act is a good idea, My only problem is that people even americans can be held for an unlimited amount of time without representation.
