Purchase a copy of The Writer's Market 2007. It contains a long list publishers and agents by genre and format. You will also find submission guidelines, etc.

Also, there are other books available which can help you with agents. One that come to mind is the Guide to Literary Agents 2007 by Joanna Masterson (Editor)

...and then keep submitting and keep writing! Good luck!

Obtain or peruse a copy of The Writer's Market. Inside you will find a long list not only of potential publishers but also of agents. You will find submission guidelines including whether or not you should send your entire manuscript or a query letter with the first few chapters, etc.

Do your research and roll up your sleeves because now the real work begins.

No, publishers will not look at anything that comes from you. You'll need an agent. Most publishers don't look at unagented material anymore. When your novel is finished and perfect, send query letters to agents. Google "sample query letters" to look at how they are done. Don't worry about it until your book is finished and perfect, though.
