It is float bladder diesese this is why it occurs
1. flake food- flake food makes fish swim to the top and take in a lot of excess air and that over time messes with the float bladder
2. old age- fish get old and grey to, and so do there insides.
3.bacterial infection
4.damage from fighting with other fish
5.breeding
6.poor water quality
7.transportation from dealer.

here's how to cure it
put your fish in a shallow tank(2in above dorsal fin) and treat with an antibiotic and change water every day.

Loads of myths and incorrect info is floating around out there. It would help to know what kind of fish it is, but two things can cause this; swim bladder infections and constipation. Yes, constipation.

First we'll hope it's the constipation issue. Try not feeding the fish for a day and then offer it an english pea. I suggest frozen peas that have been thawed, that gives them the right consistency. Just squeeze it out of the hull and feed the soft inside part to your fish. It might take several tries over the course of a day before the fish eats any of the pea, but once it will that should solve the problem in about a day.

If that doesn't work you will need to treat with an antibiotic. I would suggest you use Maracyn 2 or Furan-2. Just treat as directed on the package for 10 days to 2 weeks.

It sounds to me like there is a problem with your fishes swim bladder. This can really only be fixed by going to the vet, but considering it's a fish (no offense I love them too) the vet bill will cost more than the fish itself......

Sounds to me as if your fish is having some sort of problem with his/her swim bladder not working properly.

I dunno if this is fatal or not, unfortunately.

EDIT: Been so long since I had fish, that I'd forgotten about constipation. I actually once had that happen to one of the goldfish that I had, when I was younger.

Please refer to Magicman's post, and hope for the best!

he is going to die. I'm sorry, but he is. that's what happened to my goldfish and it's their swim bladder that gets messed up, it fills with air. but some fish just DO that, so you might want to wait awhile before you go through with euthenasia.

if it stays at the top but is still alive, here are some ways you can euthenize them:

put them in a ziploc and freeze them (this sounds TERRIBLE but they just die peacefully)
put a bit of vodka in their tank (take 'em out if you have more than one fish!) and they'll die pretty quickly

i'm sooooo sorry!!! :-(

Don't worry, your fish isn't dying, it is just being hyperactive and esentric, it's normal behavior, I'm a vet, and if your fish was dying, it would be just laying there 3 days straight before dying. Your fish will be ok!!!!!!!!!
