I got this computer, it has pentium 4 processor.
So, it won't get me to windows because it was password protected and I bought it used as is from a school sale. I understand i can get the linux operating system for free. I am a student, need programs similar to microsoft works and something for music. Should I save my self some bucks and override everything installing linux, or should I pay someone to override the passwords in the computer?

About a year ago one of my best friends needed a re-install of Windows on his notebook again, and since he's a bit of a noob when dealing with computers, I offered to install it. Now, this happened twice before, so I asked him whether he would mind something new... He didn't object to this and I installed Ubuntu on his notebook.

Installation was very easy, fast and all devices were automatically recognized. And all applications a regular user would ever need came pre-installed, including Open Office. His ADSL connection worked from the very minute he connected his notebook at home.

Now, this is over a year ago; before installing Ubuntu, he would call me on a regular basis to sort out problems, remove spyware, viruses, update the security software, slow-downs, etcetera, etcetera. So far I haven't had ANY call from him relating to computer problems, bar one: he can't really play certain games he likes. So he got a xbox 360.

Ubuntu never made any problems for him, never crashed, AND considering he's not very apt at using a computer, he feels Ubuntu to be very user-friendly, even saying he prefers it over Windows.

Now, I work with both MS Office and OpenOffice, and must say I prefer to use Writer, rather than Word: I am an experienced Word user (I trained thousands of people in MS Office), but the last two versions just treat me as if I am a complete idiot. Yes, MS Office is a good office, however, it is my believe that OpenOffice is at least as good. So I advise most people to get OpenOffice as opposed to MS Office when given the choice. These days I use OpenOffice for writing.

As for music, there are lots of freeware editors, players, video editors, and more available.

Just download Kubuntu or Ubuntu's installation disk, and give it a try: you can start Ubuntu from the cd first, to check whether you like it, and if you do, install.

If I didn't have to use the Windows platform for certain graphics applications which I teach, I'd install Ubuntu on my main machine. Actually, it IS installed on my two other computers.

CHeers!

PS "El Cheapo"? "Yucky"? "Boring"? Oh please. Don't get emotional. Ubuntu just... works. I like Windows, but it has it fair share of problems. Nor is Ubuntu or MacosX perfect. No platform is.

Pay some to override the password because thier is no point in having a linux because its not that fast, its not organized, and with windows its its easier to handle.

Get Linux. I recommend Kubuntu to start with, as it provides the most Windows-like experience. However, Linux is NOT Windows.

There are Linux versions (or similar to) of every Windows program you can think of, and even some you can't!

MS Works = Open Office, KOffice.
Media player = sooo many.

Obviously not good enough. You don't see many teens saying "Man, I need to get some Linux running on my computer". Really, it's just El Cheapo's version of an operating system. Real men buy real operating systems like Windows or OS X, but not Linux. And why would somebody call it 'Linux'? It's a yucky name, and a yucky operating system. Plus, it's really annoying when they like to tell every Windows user "Hey, have you tried Linux? It's free, boring....blah, blah, blah" Trust me, it's so annoying when they do it. Don't get it. It's really nothing. Plus it's not user friendly.

I you have another computer to use, you can download and burn a live CD (probably on DVD) of linux. Then you can boot the system from CD to see if you can read any files on there, if you are interested, before wiping it out.

The password is easy to crack, but it could take time. Seach for "Windows password crack". http://ophcrack.sourceforge.net is one example.

Use Linux, it has Open Office which is compatible with MS Office, plenty of music players etc and is much more secure and stable.
