I've always been really into bands like Pink Floyd and The Doors.

So my question is, to older folks, or people who sort of know...were these bands very mainstream and or popular in their times?

just how popular?

Pink Floyd was not main stream popular. They had a few songs that hit the main stream but all in all no.

The Doors however weren't around too long because of the early death of Morrison. They were mainstream.

first off " Political " must be living under a rock ...

The VERY popular groups of the 1960's and 1970's
are Black Sabbath,The Doors,Pink Floyd,Led Zeppelin,The Eagles and so on ..some may Disagree with me,but we are all in titled to our op ions ..

The Doors are the Charismatic " Jim LizzardKing Morrison
were the WHOLE generation ..suggest you try listening to " UnKnowen Solider ", " Whiskey Ship", odd course " Riders of the storm " ....

Pink Floyd ..well, they are the " Grateful Dead " of my era the 1970's ...from the FAR out Echo's, to the uberpopular " The Wall " Pink Floyd will no doubt go down as one of the most influential bands in Rock ... Check out these three ...

1) Pig's
2) Echo's
3) Another brick in the wall

I wasn't alive then, but my dad said that when Pink Floyd released Dark Side of the Moon, he took on an obsessive phase. I think that their most popular has always been popular, but their less popular is just now catching on as mainstream.

Yes, both bands were just as popular in their day as bands are popular today. One big crucial difference though.
Unlike most bands today that will soon be forgotten, bands like Floyd, Doors, Zeppelin, Beatles, and others can, will and are standing the test of time. I'm amazed to see young people today still enjoying the music from the 60's and 70's.
I don't think bands like My Chemical Romance or Fall out Boy will stand the test of time.
I would even venture to say, they were more popular in their day than two new bands I mentioned are popular today.

Very popular. The Doors even had a few top 40 hits. And Dark Side of the Moon was on the Billboard album charts for something like 10 years.

Those bands were pretty popular and mainstream in the late 60's through the 70's. They are like legends today, I would say.

The Doors were definitely mainstream. They had two number one hits and several more top forty hits during their hey day. Pink Floyd was also well known of course, but they were less of a pop phenomenon and more of an underground drug culture draw.

The Doors had a LARGE audience because of the strength of their music and Jim Morrison's dynamic voice and presence. They were extremely popular.

Pink Floyd has had a devoted following for a number of years, consisting mainly of stoners. I do not mean that in a bad way -- I was one of them and enjoyed their music greatly.

I still listen to The Doors and Pink Floyd, but my wild youth is well behind me.

lol, yes, they were very popular. This was the "in" thing when us old people were young teens and young adults. How popular, well, it was a must have to get the record when it came out, and you would die to win tickets on the radio to see them. Same as popular bands are today, it was like that way back when.
