You can you your ATM card almost anywhere to get cash and credit card to pay for hotels etc. This gives you the lowest fees for exchange of currency plus you will not end up with extra which you will have to pay fees to exchange back. Trying to out guess the path of the dollar vs the pound is far from a sure thing but the most probable is there won't be much change over the next several months. You can hedge by prepaying some of your hotel reservation to get today's exchange rates if you are worried.

Use a credit card, then pay it asap when you get back. You won't have to worry about any lost money during the exchange. I suppose it just about equals out in the long run though.

American Express travelers checks; good for cities, banks (Lloyd's, Bank of England or Bank of Scotland, Barclays), convert to pounds as needed, if lost, no big call it in as AWOL.
