In Darfur a woman has been kidnapped and tortured - as part of her torture whe was forced to hang her own child.

Isn't this just as hideous as the current headlines if not worse?
(Don't get me wrong - I am disgusted by what has happened in Portugal and I hope to God that Madeleine McCann is found safe and well .)

I am not saying that Madeleine's disappearance should not be headline news, I am saying that this should also be headline.

Oh god. I actually felt sick when I read that. Almost nobody knows about whats going on in Darfur, and it makes me sick.

I really hope Maddy is found safe and well, but that is absolutely horrendous, and that kind of thing happens a lot over there, but does it get any press coverage? No! What's happening over there is just as bad, if not worse than the holocaust and the fact that no one cares makes me physically sick.

Your question in itself provides its own answer.
Now, ( almost) anyone answering this question is enraged.
Yet the Darfur tragedy has been unfolding in all its grim horror for years.
Oxfam and others have tried to arouse public interest. We ( my school) all took part in Blue Hat For Darfur day last year in the hopes of making parents sit up and listen.
We as humans can only absorb so much at a time. Being told about this poor woman and her child coming in the wake of the Madeline issue ,which has already heightened our emotions, we are better prepared to absorb the gruesomeness of the Darfur news.
People not only get the government they deserve, they get they media they need as well.
Individuals have collective power in their buying habits, voting habits and so on.
If you want change from the media, demand it. If you want your government to listen to your views and make rational decisions , demand it. Not just today, but every day.
The world is yours. Coloured pretty it may not be, but hope will make it shine given a chance.

That is so horrible it brings tears to my eyes to just hear it. You are correct -- that should be headline news as well. But with the media, it s more what will sell and bring attention --and of course if it is more "well to do " people involved. Don't get me wrong --it is awful what has happened to Madeleine in Portugal ( her parents were totally irresponsible but going through h*** of course) -- but the public should hear more about what terrible things are happening in third world areas and to poor people as well.

and why isn't the nice woman who gave me change for the bus home when my bag was stolen on the news?
and the people who chained themselves to the doors of a restaurant that served the meat of baby cows who hadn't been allowed to walk to keep their meat tender.
and the the fireman who ran into a flaming house to get a familys dog out.
and so many other people who do nice things like that.

why does headline news always have to be about something horrible?

because no one gives a s**t do they? the media dont care, the governments dont care - if they did, they would get in there and do something about it. but in reality whats in it for the british government? nothing - no oil, no money - its all crap.

ive been saying it al along - yes its sad that a girl was kidnapped in portugal - but hello people - crap is going on ALL over the world and the majority of the time we are all happy to turn a blind eye

That is just horrendous and I am astounded it has not been given more coverage. I think Ollie and Hollz have made good points. It's atrocious, but there you go.

Like everyone else, I also hope Madeleine is found safe and well.

Darfur

The National Geographic Monitor said it was the worst genocide in the history of the world. Where they throw live babies into a fire to make parents do what they want.
Taking 30,000 children to use as sex slaves, and brutally raping and killing millions of innocent people.

I'm sure the reason we're not there is because of all the protestors of war. More Muslims fighting, it's a sad sad situation and I'm glad I'm not Muslim.

because Madeline is the cutest little girl, her mum is very attractive, they are doctors, they have those adorable twins etc the media loves this type of story. think of all the missing people in the world and it you believe the media the only missing people are cute teenage girls. its sick but that's what people want to read about. supply and demand at its most perverse I'm afraid. this women was probably no as easy on the eye as Maddy and her mum

You are correct. That should be headline news. I am outraged by that.

I too hope that little girl is found safe. The poor little girl, she must be very scared. I pray she is still alive.
