All electric motors are powered by magnetic energy...electro-magnetic energy. My Prius Hybrid goes over 80 mph on electro-magnetic power alone when it has enough in the battery to power the electric motor. I'd say an "engine powered by magnetic energy" has in fact been invented.

If you are suggesting harnessing the Earth's magnetism, just consider this. Can you or can you not turn a magnetic needle away from pointing north with your bare hand? The answer is, obviously, you can. Earth's magnetism is way too weak to harness for anything but moving small devices...like the needle of a magnetic compass.

I'm not sure waht you mean by "magnetic energy" but there has been many instances where magnetic levitation is now in use.
Disney world in Florida has used this system for many years already, the Japanese have a magnetic train running for quite some time and I understand Germany also has this system working.
The problem with this system is the magnets are "electro magnets" and are in permanent placement.
Any powerful magnet would be of the electro type and uses much electricity, so again, we are left with a electric power supply problem.

The earth's magnetic field is far too weak to be used for engines. Its cheaper to run engines on electricity than to use energy to create a magnetic field, then use that magnetism to run an engine. Technically however, It could be done but.

Magnetism is essentially a byproduct of electric currents, and it takes alot more power to generate a magnetic field than could be extracted from it.
