That's how hybrids are made. If you look (especially in the African cichlid area!) in a pet store, there are sometimes tanks labelled "assorted" or "mixed" African cichlids, etc. These are accidental (usually) breedings between one type of fish and another. As long as the fish is from the same branch of the species, they can spawn:
ie - goldfish / carp / koi
guppies / Endler's livebearers

Even my blood parrot is nothing but a hybrid between a Midas, Red Devil and severum. Flowerhorns are another example of hybrid fish.

It all depends on how closely related the species are. Like someone else said, many African cichlids can hybridize with each other, sometimes producing interesting new color combinations, although normally they turn out a kind of brown color. However, more distantly related fish, like for example an African cichlid and a goldfish, usually cannot hybridize.

That can happen in some groups of fish. The african cichlids mentioned above are one group where it's common and live bearers are another. Generally though it's a rare thing to happen in an aquarium and really should be discouraged. Most hybrids that survive are sterile and quite often deformed as well.

Depends. Some species can hybridize (e.g., sunfish) while others cannot. You won't see a shark hybidizing with a guppie but you may see a white perch and a striped bass hybridizing. It all depends on how closely related the species are. I hope that helps.

I really like this questions. Here is a star! Well, i think this is the way hybridized fish are made such as goldfish and parrot cichlid.

Normally, only intra-species can fertilize each other (same kind), but if they are closely enough related, inter-species can reproduce but the offspring will be sterile because of the genetic difference between the two parents.
