Both the lever and the shift shaft can be replaced, although, the shaft replacement may not be for beginner mechanics. If the problem is just the lever replace it, probably less than twenty bucks. If its the shaft the quick fix would be to have the lever tack welded onto the shaft. Another possible is to drill a hole into the joint (drill cuts half into lever and half into shaft) then tap and screw in a bolt to act like a woodruff key, at least that way you will be able to remove it.

Is the shift lever stripped? Or the shift shaft?

If the motor itself is ok, weld the shift lever back. otherwise buy 550 motor.
