YES. It is possible!! The reason why people think they have short lives is because they come cheap, people stick them in SMALL STUPID FISH BOWLS AND DON"T BOTHER TO READ EXPERIENCES POSTED BY EXPERIENCED FISH OWNERS AND STICK AS MANY FISH IN A SMALL TANK JUST BECAUSE THEY ARE IN A SMALL SIZE. They give off lots of ammonia and grow big. They can live quite long.
Now, you think I am insane now. You think, oh come on, goldfish don't need THAT much space, but they do.
Rule of thumb: First goldfish gets 30 gallons. Every additional goldfish gets 10 - 20 gallons more.
Now I am done. :D

When taken care of properly, goldfish have about a 20 year lifespan. The oldest one in a home aquarium was 43 years! But the avg should be between 20 - 30 yrs. This, of course, is giving ample tank room (10 gallons per fish), proper feeding, proper filtration (TONS!!!) and religious water changes.
Oldest koi (FYI..same family) is recorded at over 200 yrs old!

Goldfishes are hybrid from Koi. Koi have life-spent of over 70 years, so there's not reasons why Goldfishes can't live 17 years under proper care.

Of course, in fact they should live that long, even the fancier breeds can. Regular goldfish should live longer than that.
