anti spyware & antivirus software will normally schedule for an automatic scanning. normally this will do & you dont have to scan your pc manually but if it only run a quick scan (not full scan) you still have to run a full scan manually. if you are always online, share your pc with others or using removeable storage you must at least run a full scan twice a week & a quick scan daily. both software must have an internet connection to get the best out of it. it must be updated automatically.

If you have got anti-virus and anti-spyware that provide real time protection (background protection), then I would say scanning once every week would be OK. However, if your anti-virus and anti-spyware have only on-demand scanning, then scanning every 2-3 days is necessary. Moreover, you should also carry out a scan the moment you feel your computer's acting weirdly.

I do mine everyday (automatically), never done me any harm. Just make sure your spyware & anti virus are up to date. I use Zonealarm & AVG & have been using them for 4 years works a treat. They can be downloaded for free just google each on seperatly.

I have Norton (the paid version) and they recommend once a week do a full scan. Scan any files you download as you go.

When ever you think it is necessary. Depends on the kinds of emails that you receive. My computer has Avast on it because the company that made my computer recommended it and it up dates very often.

whenever your computer feels slow, but if you are worried about viruses , run every 2 weeks.
