Christopher Columbus believed that since the world was round, you didn't have to sail around stormy Cape Horn, the tip of Africa to get to Asia. He concluded that if you sail west far enough you will arrive there. He didn't know that there was a continent in between Europe and Asia. When he sailed to Asia, he ran into America, believing it was Asia.
