Going on vacation with Mom, she's paying, but I'm driving. What's the best way to pay, with my card and she repays, or hers, or doesn't it matter.

Absolutely pay with credit card! Not those fake visa/mc wannabee debit cards either. Use a real credit card. Probably should be the driver's card for reasons below.

If you have more than one, call them and ask them if they provide free rental car insurance, many do. Make that the one you use. Also call your current auto insurance carrier and ask if your policy covers you in a rental car. Again, many do.

The goal is to avoid paying those ridiculous insurance fees they try and sell you with the rental for coverage you may already possess.

Do NOT buy the tankful of gas they will offer to sell you, unless you know you will burn completely through that tank and are able to return it with very little left in the tank.

Do a quick inspection of the car before leaving their lot. Check for any damages and make sure they take note of it before you leave, or give you an undamaged car.

Lastly, if you have a camera phone or digital camera, walk around the car and take a few snapshots of the car when you turn it in. I've heard stories about how rental companies try and send bills for damages a month or two later. If you've got the photos of when you turned it in, you can say, "No way Jose, Here's the photos of when I turned it in. See, no damage here."

most car rental places require the driver to pay with THEIR credit card, so they will be more responsible... I f you have the choice, let her pay in the 1st place since she will be paying you back anyhow...
