Why does the check engine light come on briefly when i push hard on the gas in my mercury cougar 3.8?

When i am going up an upgrade if i push hard on the gas my check engine light comes of briefly and then goes back out and its like it has no power going up upgrades but other than that it runs fine

You my have a bad connection somewhere that get stressed when you are on the throttle hard. Could be a pain to find. Check all your connections, electrical AND vacuum.

Well this is a bit complicated and probably requires proper dealer service. Cougar is a fairly newer car, with newer car the engine is equiped with a number of sensors for smog, performance etc. Unless it is mechancial problem which from your statement i dont' believe is the case, it probably is a faulty sensor in the engine compartment. This shouldn't bother you unless you are experiencing performance or mechnical issues. However, at some point you need to have it looked at because it could signal that your engine is not performing to specs, which will eventually mean poor gas mileage and putting out more smog. So probably nothing other than being annoying but take to a mechanic and have it looked at.
