I have 10 hedges that are pretty big, I'd say 5 feet tall by 4 feet wide and 4 feet deep. I've already trimmed the bushes down to where they all meet before they go under the ground. I've thought about pulling them up with my truck, but I think that the roots might go further out than I expected and I don't want them to ruin the yard. I don't think that I want to dig them up with a spade as the main root is about 10 inches in diameter. Would pulling them up with my truck be a good idea, or is there a better one?

When we purchased our house it had been neglected for years. The bushes completely hid the porch and all of the decorative gingerbread! These were six of the ugliest bushes I have ever seen in my life. First we chopped to the ground. Second we dug out a hole around the bushes and then proceeded to hack out some of the bigger roots with a hatchet. We may have even used a chainsaw. It took my husband and I maybe a day and a half, but we knew that they would not come back!

There was only one that we used poison on. We happen to have a family member that worked for a phone company. Apparently they have some really tough poison that can kill with only minimal application. Nasty stuff. We had to be careful and only spray the plant.

We can not get vehicles on to our property because it sits on a rise. There also would have been no room for a truck. It will take hard work to hack out the roots, but I preferred that to poisoning. Especially when we knew we would plant other things in the same area.

I hired someone to remove our overgrown hedges. They were also 5 feet tall in spots and 6 feet wide. The tree guy used a stump-grinder for most of it and switched to a hatchet for the stumps that were really close to the house. You can get rid of the main stumps fairly quickly using a sharp hatchet. The surrounding roots can be left to break-down over time.

that's the way that i did our yard but after you get them half way out stop so that you can cut the root if it starts destroying the yard to much you can always repair the yard if it does damage it though, digging it up my hand with a spade is long hard work.

thats the best and easiest way to do it. dig around the base of the bush, wrap the chian around the base and hook it to the truck FRAME. give a couple good jerks , shake off the roots and rake the dirt back in the hole.

Cut them off at the trunk, then get a machine to rip out the stump. The stumps have huge root bases so be carefull

Instead of digging up old bushes I prefer to kill them in place with Round-up and then cut them at ground level.
