1) Throwing a frisbee on the beach is probably no more a sport than throwing a football at the park.
2) The Olympics are not a good indicator of what a sport is. If so, then softball and baseball are no longer sports.
3) Ultimate Frisbee, a competitive game played with a frisbee, is definitely a sport. Games often last over an hour with strategy, fitness, and lots of running!
4) Disc Golf, a game played with frisbee similar to golf, can arguably not be considered a sport. But then golf and bowling may not be sports either.
I guess the bigger question is how do YOU define a sport?

There arguments to say that you are both right and wrong. Ultimate Frisbee/Flying Disc is not considered a sport by the 'Sport England' committee, but only a 'recreational activity'. It is also not an Olympic Sport.
I strongly believe that it is a sport.
Ultimate Frisbee is a growing sport. Whether it is on any list or not, it involves a great amount of physical fitness and exertion, however, and much more than most sports - how fit do you have to be to play top level snooker?? There is a national association for Ultimate in an increasing number of countries.
The World Ultimate Club Championships took place last year in Perth with nearly 90 teams from around the world that had qualified for the tournament competing for the top prizes.
The European Ultimate Championships take place in Southamption this summer with 64 national teams already confirmed, coming together to compete for the European title in various divisions.
How can a game that involves fitness, running, jumping, teams, rules, energy, skill and strategy not be called a sport?

Ultimate is a sport. It involves a physical competition with a winner. If you wish to expand the definition of sport, the winner is objective, determined by clearly defined points. The field and rules are set up so that it's quite comparable to football or soccer.
Freestyle frisbee, which is like tricking with a disc, is a whole different subject.
And just throwing it back and forth, not a sport; there's no contest.

WOW - I've never heard of anyone actually questioning this. Of course, Ultimate is a sport. Are you maybe confused about the difference between throwing a disc back and forth for fun and the very competitive and athletic team sport known as Ultimate, wherein rules are adhered to, score is kept, and injuries are suffered? There are many local and regional tournaments, rankings, and even a world championship every year. There has also been talk of making it an Olympic event. There is no question that Ultimate is a sport.

Come ON! Don't confuse "Frisbee" with a sport that has been in existence for over 30 years, demands peak aerobic and mental performance, uses a field with endzones the size of a soccer field, has been hosting national and world tournaments for over a decade, is growing exponentially as a college-funded sport and requires immense strategy, endurance and focus. I've played for 18 years, including a college team for 4 of those.
Ultimate has been an Olympic exhibition sport, but Olympics should not be used as a gauge for "sport". The Olympics are a traditional set of sports predetermined by the Greeks. Ultimate is simply a newer sport, speaking in terms of human history. And get out and watch a tournament sometime. They're everywhere, and it's insulting to imply that our sport, which many of us have left "mainstream" sports to play due to its demanding nature, doesn't exist. Whatever. Go back to painting your nails.

Regardless of the opinions of those who have never played the sport (and are therefore unqualified to answer) ultimate frisbee is a sport. It requires effort, training, skill and is played in with two teams in which one is the winner. If you think ultimate isn't a sport, I would ask you to look up the definition of sport.

Sigh....yes. Ultimate is a sport, as long as you define a sport as an athletic competition with a standard set of rules which eventually leaves you sweating (fans of golf and bowling would argue this, and they have a point). You run, jump, have to be able to throw from awkward angles - it involves a hell of a lot more skills than something like baseball (see ball, hit ball with stick, run 90 feet). Some of the most ridiculous athletes I know are Ultimate players.
Throwing around on a beach or in the park? Well that's just fun.

Anybody who thinks ultimate is not a sport has never played, or is confusing it with just throwing a disc. The Olympics are not a good gauge for what is a sport. If curling is a sport, then ultimate is definitely a sport. The athletes that play at the top level of ultimate could run circles around any baseball player.

I mean, it depends on how you define sport. But there are professional Ultimate Frisbee Leagues.. and it's been on ESPN before.
