This PC is not a tower-type, but it is called somthing else-I think a desktop. But aren't all PCs(IBM compatable) refered to as desktops. It is a HP Vectra vl420 PC VT and it looks like this:

Yes, you can operate vertically just make sure you have a stand for it. Without the grommets on the bottom it is more likely to tip without one. Make sure you leave easy access to the cd/dvd drive.

I have seen people do it. I, personally, don't have the courage to turn a tower on its side or a flat CPU sideways.

I don't think all PCs are IBM compatible, although some programmers are creating software which can be used on either.

HP is a good name and has a good reputation. It also has good support. To put your mind at ease, you can go to HP's website and e-mail them. You will get a reply in an hour or so.

Yes, they can, but an optical drive (CD, DVD, etc.) that is designed for horizontal operation may have a hard time handling a vertically inserted disk. Depending on the case's design, standing a desktop on end may lead to an unstable installation.

that thing should be in a museum. no it wont work well on it side .. the drive would be sideways, along with the hard drive , which will put stress on the spindle for the disk platters..
causing a hard drive failure..

did you buy it off someone ??or dust it off from your closet ?? that thing is way old school

Yes, just use a little care when inserting a CD. But, the CD drive will work just fine on it's edge.

Yes that is the desktop configuration, never turn it on it's side, use a tower case..

it will run the same, just make sure the fan is at the bottom so it can filter dust out, the only other difference is the CD-ROM will be sideways.

It will work, but when it comes to the CD it is hard to insert the CD into it.
