I have a big tree that kills my grass, and I don't even know where to start w/ flowers...I live in Kansas. I want flowers that will bloom through the summer, is that possible? Please give some advise on what kind and if I can plant them under the tree or in sunlight...Thank you
Nessa

Begonias and marigolds work well. If you have a lot of shade try planting impatiens. They come in many beautiful colors. Just don't plant them too close together. Keep them watered about every other day. Check to make sure they don't get too dry. You may need to water more often if it is very hot or dry where you are. All of these varieties will bloom through the summer. You have to pinch the heads off of marigolds once they turn brown and then new ones will appear in their places. Good luck! Growing flowers is fun!

Hi Nessa!
Under the tree you are probably looking at container gardening - as the tree roots will be taking all the growing space under the tree.
The only plants that will bloom all summer are "bedding plants / annuals" Visit your local garden centre and they will be able to advise you.
Have fun!!!!! Go wild, try some of each so you know what you like for next year.

Dianthus will bloom all summer and they are a perennial, that will come back every year, they are only about 8 inches high. I am adding a link to a great web site to help you out and to find your zone. also the book gardening for dummies is great

under the tree try some hostas they do better in shade, for the sun light plant some marigolds they have nice colors and they do well in the sun light, they also have different heights of growth so you can have some nice arrangements with them, plus both of them are really easy to grow, plus the hostas come back every year

Hi!!

My favorite gardening site is: http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/gl_gardening_basics/0,1784,HGTV_3589,00.html

I'm fairly new to gardening, too, and I go to hgtv.com all the time.

I know people have different preferences. This site will help you pick out plants for color, sun/shade, how large they grow, etc. I live in SW MO, and I use it to find flowers all the time.

Have fun!!
